Fingers Playing Piano Keys

Position:

Church Pianist / Accompanist (Part Time)

Reports to:

Pastor / Director of Music Ministries / Worship Committee

Status:

Part-Time, 1099

Hours:

Estimated work hours per week: 8-12 hours, starting January 2026

Compensation:

$200 per week; Negotiable, Commensurate with experience

Summary
 

The Church Pianist/Accompanist is responsible for providing instrumental music to enhance and support the worship life of the congregation. This person will work collaboratively with the Pastor to provide high-quality piano music for all scheduled services, rehearsals, and special events.

Key Responsibilities and Duties
 

A. Worship Services

  • Provide piano accompaniment for all regular worship services [Sundays 10:45 AM].

  • Play service music, including but not limited to, Preludes, Postludes, Offertories, Hymns, and accompanying congregational singing.

  • Provide music for special seasonal services, including Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, and Easter etc.

  • Consult with the Pastor to select appropriate music that aligns with the liturgical calendar, the sermon theme, and the church's theology.

B. Rehearsals and Accompaniment

  • Provide accompaniment for vocal and instrumental soloists or small ensembles for special music as needed, including occasional extra rehearsals.

C. Administration and Maintenance

  • Arrive 30 minutes prior to all rehearsals and services to warm up and confer with any vocal and instrumental soloists or small ensembles.

  • Assist the Pastor in locating and preparing substitute musicians for planned absences, with two weeks' prior notification to the Pastor.

  • Oversee the basic care and maintenance of the church's pianos/Keyboards/organ, including coordinating annual tuning with the Pastor.

D. Optional/Additional Duties (Separate Compensation)

  • Be available to play for church members' weddings, funerals/memorial services for a fee, separate from the regular salary.
     

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
 

  • Spiritual Maturity: A personal faith in Jesus Christ and a commitment to serving in a ministry context.

  • Piano Proficiency: Excellent instrumental skill on the piano, with the ability to play with a high degree of musicality and sensitivity.  Ability to play the organ a plus, but not required.

  • Music Versatility: Demonstrated ability to play in the church's primary worship style, which is  traditional 4-part hymns, but can also include gospel, blended, or contemporary styles as needed.

  • Accompaniment Skills: Proven experience and competence as a choral and vocal accompanist, including following a director.

  • Reading Skills: Strong sight-reading skills and the ability to learn new music quickly and accurately. Ability to improvise or play from a lead sheet/chord chart is a plus.

  • Collaboration: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively and with a positive attitude with the Pastor, staff, and volunteers.
     

Qualifications
 

  • Education: High school diploma/GED; degree in music preferred but not required.

  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience as a church pianist or accompanist is preferred but not required.

  • Background Check: Must pass a criminal background check and Pennsylvania Child Abuse History.
